HEALTHY LIVING. Third grade physical education students of William S. Reyes Elementary School enjoy their SUBWAY® sandwiches during their fieldtrip to the restaurant chain’s Chalan Piao outlet where they were taught about healthy eating habits. The field trip was arranged by their PE instructor, Brandon Concepcion.

WSR physical education class ties up with SUBWAY® to teach kids healthy eating habits

SUBWAY® --The Physical education class of William S. Reyes Elementary School has once again partnered with SUBWAY® Investments Corp. to teach children about healthy eating, and to help them develop the habit while they are young.

More than 200 second and third grade students belonging to the class of WSR physical education instructor Brandon Concepcion went on a series of 10 field trips to SUBWAY® restaurant in Chalan Piao on Sept. 17, 18, 19, 21, 24 and 27 and on Oct. 1, 2, 3, and 4.  Everyday, an average of 20 PE students went on a field trip to SUBWAY® for a lesson on healthy foods.

The children were taught “three words of the day”—fiber, anti-oxidant, and calcium and where they could get these important nutrients.

“SUBWAY® sandwiches are full of fiber, anti-oxidants and calcium,” Concepcion said.

Leilannie Salvani, SUBWAY® Investments Corp. administrative and personnel supervisor, served as the resource person on the field trip.   Salvani explained to the students what each of the vegetables that goes in a SUBWAY® sandwich does for their health—from the lettuce to the cucumber, sweet onions and olives, among others.

Lettuce is rich in fiber.  It helps with the regulation of the digestive system.  Some examples of anti-oxidants are bell pepper, pickles, cucumber, and onion.  Calcium-rich foods include milk and cheese.

“This is the best way for the kids to know why vegetables are good for them,” Concepcion said.

“Usually, they only get to hear about it, but don’t really get a chance to taste the vegetables and know if they like it or not. Here at SUBWAY® , they are taught correct health food choices—whole wheat bread instead of white bread; fat-free sauces instead of mayonnaise; lean ham instead of bacon. And they get an extra point for having all the veggies in their SUBWAY® sandwiches,” he added.

Concepcion said the students were given classroom exams about what they have learned from the field trip.

In March this year, Concepcion’s fourth and sixth grade students also went to SUBWAY® in Chalan Piao for similar field trips.

Marcos W. Fong, managing director of Subway Investments Corporation, said that Subway is committed to serve healthy food to people of all ages.

“Subway(R) is committed to fight the battle against childhood obesity by being the first quick service restaurant to offer healthy kids meals that are consistent with the American Heart Associations dietary recommendations. It is a lifestyle that kids have to learn young as health becomes a more serious issue affecting our community,” Fong said.

SUBWAYÒ supports and promotes living a healthy lifestyle for all ages through a combination of exercise and a healthful diet rich in fresh vegetables, complex carbohydrates, lean protein and low fat.

There are three SUBWAYÒ locations on Saipan, Gualo Rai, Chalan Piao, and Paseo de Marianas.
